Australian for “be-yar”

3 Apr

Perhaps this isn’t something to be proud of, every time I hear two of my son’s best words right now, I can’t help but laugh.  Loudly.

The vices of choice in our house?  Not so hard to guess, when my 19 month old points to any silver can and says, clear as day “Bee-ya” (Beer, said like his Daddy, with an Australian accent), or any mug and states “caw-key” (translation – “coffee”).  The other day, at my grandma’s house, my aunt walked by while cracking a can of diet coke.  At the distinctive sound of the opening of a carbonated beverage, Austin turned his head, saw the silver can, and pointed and loudly proclaimed “Bee-ya.”  Oh boy. How embarrassing…

Whenever he sees a can sitting around, he’ll point and say “beer” and then look at me and say “Daddy.”  whenever daddy goes into the garage, the sound of him shutting the garage door (where we keep said adult beverages) prompts Austin to say “Daddy Beer.”  Seriously?  I laugh so hard every time, which only encourages him to keep doing it…

At least he isn’t associating the beer with his pregnant mama, right?  I do get associated with the coffee, but I stick to ONE CUP A DAY, darn it, and I enjoy every delightful sip.

Don’t think we’re alcoholics…honestly, the hubby works hard and deserves his nightly can of Natty Light.  He just isn’t so good at getting them into the recycle bin once they’ve served their purpose, and so there is almost always a can to be found somewhere in the living room or kitchen.  And the cans are shiny, and they make fun crunching noises when you squeeze them, and if you tip them over sometimes a funny smelling liquid will dribble out…if you’re a toddler, how do you NOT love an empty beer can?
